Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced plans to establish a semiconductor park in Kancheepuram as the state seeks to strengthen its position in India’s growing chip and electronics manufacturing ecosystem. The proposed park is expected to support semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, testing, research and related industries while attracting investments and creating skilled employment opportunities.
The government has notified the ₹1,27,500-crore Semicon 2.0 programme, laying out eligibility criteria and financial incentives for India’s semiconductor ecosystem. The scheme covers chip design, semiconductor fabrication, equipment and materials, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent development. It offers up to 40% fiscal support for silicon fabs, 35% for specialised fabs and advanced packaging, and 25% for conventional packaging.
The Gujarat government has extended its ban on gutkha, pan masala and other chewable products containing tobacco or nicotine for another year. The fresh prohibition order will come into effect from September 13. The government said the decision is aimed at protecting public health and controlling the consumption of tobacco and nicotine-based products.
