The Centre has assured Bihar that the state’s water requirements will be considered before India takes a decision on renewing its Ganga Water Sharing Treaty with Bangladesh. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar gave the assurance in a letter to JD(U) national working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, who had raised the issue in Parliament. The 30-year agreement, signed in 1996, is scheduled to expire in December 2026.
