The Centre has provided a detailed explanation of the changes and apparent anomalies in India’s latest GDP estimates. After releasing the new GDP series with 2022-23 as the base year on August 31, the government issued additional clarifications on September 2. The key issues include the double-deflation method, the negative implicit GVA deflator in manufacturing, revisions to the previous year’s GDP estimates, differences between the GDP deflator and CPI-WPI inflation measures, and the sharp gap between nominal and real GVA growth in mining.
RBI’s FCNR(B) Scheme Draws $100 Billion, Pushes Forex Reserves to Record High
The Reserve Bank of India’s special FCNR(B) deposit initiative has received a much stronger response than expected. The scheme, launched in June to attract foreign currency deposits from non-resident Indians, crossed the $100 billion mark by August 31. The RBI had initially expected to attract around $80 billion. With inflows exceeding expectations, the central bank closed the special swap window a month earlier than its original September 30 deadline.
