India has strongly criticised Pakistan over reports that a century-old Hindu temple in Narowal district of Punjab province was demolished. Political debate over India’s latest GDP figures has intensified after Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal criticised opposition leaders and other critics for citing what he described as incorrect numbers. Taking a sharp swipe at those presenting themselves as economic experts, Goyal remarked that some “jobless people” call themselves economists. His comments come amid a wider debate over India’s revised GDP series, its methodology, deflators and changes to earlier estimates.

The Centre has provided a detailed explanation of the changes and apparent anomalies in India’s latest GDP estimates. After releasing the new GDP series with 2022-23 as the base year on August 31, the government issued additional clarifications on September 2. The key issues include the double-deflation method, the negative implicit GVA deflator in manufacturing, revisions to the previous year’s GDP estimates, differences between the GDP deflator and CPI-WPI inflation measures, and the sharp gap between nominal and real GVA growth in mining.

The Reserve Bank of India’s special FCNR(B) deposit initiative has received a much stronger response than expected. The scheme, launched in June to attract foreign currency deposits from non-resident Indians, crossed the $100 billion mark by August 31. The RBI had initially expected to attract around $80 billion. With inflows exceeding expectations, the central bank closed the special swap window a month earlier than its original September 30 deadline. The surge in dollar inflows has helped rebuild India’s foreign exchange reserves to a record $729.3 billion and strengthened the RBI’s ability to intervene in currency markets.
