F404 Engine Delivered to HAL
GE Aerospace has started supplying F404 engines for the Tejas Mk1A programme, with a newly manufactured engine recently delivered to HAL.
The Tejas Mk1A uses the F404-IN20 engine. As the powerplant is one of the most critical components of a fighter aircraft, a steady supply of engines is essential for maintaining aircraft production schedules.
Potential Boost for Tejas Production
Engine availability has previously been one of the challenges affecting the Tejas Mk1A production programme. The start of fresh F404 deliveries could help HAL increase production momentum.

Long-Term GE Aerospace Partnership
GE Aerospace has been a long-standing engine partner for India’s Tejas programme. The company supplies F404 engines for the Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A variants.
The partnership is also expected to continue into the next generation of the programme. The more powerful F414 engine from GE Aerospace is planned for the Tejas Mk2, giving the US aerospace company an important role in India’s future fighter-aircraft development.
Tejas Mk1A Orders From the Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force has placed large orders for Tejas Mk1A aircraft as part of its efforts to modernise its fighter fleet. The aircraft is expected to play an important role in replacing older platforms and strengthening India’s indigenous combat-aircraft capabilities.
The Mk1A incorporates several upgrades, including modern avionics, radar and electronic warfare capabilities, along with beyond-visual-range weapons integration.
