Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is set to join the cast of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter Season 2, reportedly taking on the role of the charming but highly self-obsessed wizard Gilderoy Lockhart.
The casting marks an exciting addition to the new Harry Potter television adaptation, which is being developed as a more detailed retelling of J.K. Rowling’s books.
Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart
Lockhart is a colourful character introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Known for his flamboyant personality, confidence and obsession with fame, he becomes the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.
Despite presenting himself as a celebrated wizard, Lockhart’s claims about his heroic achievements hide a very different reality.
Harington, best known for portraying Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, will take on the role in a significant departure from his previous fantasy character.
A New Face for the Harry Potter Series
The HBO series is being developed as a long-form adaptation of the original Harry Potter novels, allowing each book to receive greater screen time than the earlier film adaptations.
Season 2 will focus on the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, bringing several familiar characters and storylines back to the screen.
What to Expect From Season 2
The second season is expected to explore the mysterious events surrounding the Chamber of Secrets, the attacks at Hogwarts and the discovery of secrets hidden within the school.
Lockhart’s arrival will add a lighter and more comedic element to the darker storyline.
Kit Harington’s New Fantasy Role
Harington became a global star through Game of Thrones, where his portrayal of Jon Snow made him one of the most recognisable actors in television.
His reported casting as Lockhart gives him another major role in a globally popular fantasy franchise, although the character is very different from the serious and battle-hardened Jon Snow.
